Pair: Colonel Sir A. H. J. Doyle, King's Shropshire Light Infantry

Pair: Colonel Sir A. H. J. Doyle, King's Shropshire Light Infantry

Pair: Colonel Sir A. H. J. Doyle, King's Shropshire Light Infantry, 4th Baronet of Buscombe, 'an aristocrat of the Old School' who was 'mentioned' in 1901 and later commanded 2nd Battalion during the final stages of the Anglo-Boer War Afghanistan 1878-80, no clasp (2nd Lt. A. H. J. Doyle. 85th Foot.); Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Johannesburg, South Africa 1902 (Major. A. H. J. Doyle. 2/Shrops. L.I.), contact marks, contact wear overall, nearly very fine (2) M.I.D. London Gazette 10 September 1901. Arthur Havelock James Doyle was born at Clifton, Gloucestershire on 25 February 1858 the youngest son of the well-known poet, Professor Sir Francis Hasting Charles Doyle, 2nd Baronet Buscombe. Interestingly his grandfather was also a soldier, Major-General Sir Francis Doyle, his grandfather on his mother's side was the M.P. Charles Williams-Wynn. The younger Doyle was educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, where he earned recognition for his study of fortifications. Whilst there he developed his language skills, becoming fluent in both French and German. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant with the 85th Foot on 30 January 1878 he travelled with the Battalion to India on 19 September 1878. Whilst they were stationed there the War in Afghanistan which had appeared won flared back into life with the storming of the Kabul Residency. The King's Shropshire Light Infantry were posted to the Kurrum Valley field force and there took part in the Zaimusht Expedition. The Zaimusht tribe lived above the Kurrum Road, the Battalion formed part of a punitive expedition force them into compliance and prevent them attacking British supply lines. They climbed through the narrow passes and Hills, finally succeeding in storming the mountain fastness of Zawa in which the tribe had taken refuge, this action (in which Doyle took part) effectively ended the tribes' resistance. Doyle must have performed well during the war because he was advanced Lieutenant on 19 July 1880. Still with the Battalion the next year he was with them when they were posted to Natal on 8 March 1881, serving with the Natal Field Force there until 7 December. Returning to Britian they were amalgamated with the 53rd Foot to form the King's Shropshire Light Infantry. Doyle was advanced Captain in this newly formed unit on 21 June 1885. The next year he attended the School of Instruction and completed a course in Musketry which saw him acquire a first class certificate. Still in Britian Doyle left the Regiment to pursue staff work, finding himself appointed as A.D.C. to Prince Edward of Saxe Weimar, then the G.O.C. Forces in Ireland on 2 February 1887. He held this position for three years during the fraught political turmoil caused by the Home Rule debate however Doyle eventually returned to his Regiment on 30 September 1890. Advanced Major on 19 August 1897 he was still serving in this role on the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War. Doyle did not immediately join his unit in South Africa but was posted to join 2nd Battalion in the Spring 1900, when they were in the Orange Free State. Reaching them in May he was present for the hard fought action of Houtnek, where they received high praise for their action. Further fighting followed in April and May on the Vet and Zand rivers. This was followed up by Operations in the Transvaal from May-June 1900 including actions near Johannesburg and Pretoria which continued into November and included the action at Elands River. Finally he joined the unit in the Orange River Colony from May 1900 where he again saw action at the Rhensoter River. Doyle is believed to have left South Africa in late 1900 and returned in 1902 explaining the lack of King's South Africa medal and his entitlement to the South Africa 1902 clasp. Advanced Lieutenant-Colonel on 11 February 1902 he was appointed to command 2nd Battalion during the closing stages of the war. The year after the fighting ceased he led them to India where they served for several years with Doyle being promoted Brevet Colonel on 11 February 1905. The next year he laid down command and took half pay from 11 February 1906, being appointed Colonel Commanding the South Wales Border Volunteer Infantry Brigade on 1 June 1906. Doyle officially retired on 8 May 1909 however this was not to last as he returned to an official position on the outbreak of the Great War. Appointed to command the Regiment Depot at Shrewsbury, in this role he contributed to the Battalion history in the chapter titled The Depot, which notes a number of issues with supply of even the most basic items like attestation papers in the earliest days of the war. His struggles encapsulate the spirit of the volunteers and constant struggle with bureaucracy faced by the recruiters: 'The supply of attestation papers was soon exhausted. The War Office was written to, and telegraphed to, and replied that there were no supplies available, and that they were to be written out - not very helpful. A copy was sent down to a local printer, who printed 2,000 copies in about sixteen hours at a very moderate rate. The Government contractor, a week later, wrote that unheard-of penalties could be inflicted for this breach of regulations, but no notice was taken. War Office inspectors were exceedingly complimentary at the way this difficulty had been met.' Notably Doyle's MIC notes no entitlement to any medals for his service in the Great War, only a silver war badge. He retired finally after that, taking a well earned rest and writing a book entitled '100 years of Conflict, being a Record of 6 Generals of the Doyle Family'. He inherited the baronetcy on 21 February 1933 upon the death of his brother, holding it until his own death at Boscombe, Hampshire on 19 February 1948. Doyle's obituary in the Regimental Journal portrays him as an interesting and lively figure, stating: 'It is neither fair to his memory to appraise Author Doyle's military qualifications by modern standards, nor easy for one who was twenty years his junior to assess his merits on sincerity. For he joined the original 85th King's Light Infantry in 1878, in the latter half of the Victorian era, when it was not fashionable to betray any undue keenness or enthusiasm for the art military; and he would have been the first to disclaim with a quiet smile any implication that as a soldier he was either distinguished or ambitious. He was, in fact, too kindly, too easy going, to be either, though he succeeded in commanding the 2nd K.S.L.I., a fine battalion. During four years in India, under the exacting eye of the then Commander-in-Chief, Lord Kitchener, with whom, he was on terms of easy friendship. But it is both a pleasure and a privilege to depict him as the man whom all loved for his unfailing charm, kindliness and perfect courtesy, and as what he invariable was at all times, namely, the perfect gentleman. I feel that, had he taken the trouble to qualify, he would have made a consummate diplomat: for he was always perfectly at east in any sort of society from that of Royalty downwards, and he remained completely serene and unruffled under all circumstances of exciting, strain or danger. It may seem strange that he made no effort to excel in any form of sport but what would no doubt have been regarded as a handicap to the ordinary officer was never mentioned in disparagement of Doyle. In short, he was tacitly accepted by all at his face value, to which athletic prowess could make no contribution namely that of an aristocrat of the "Old School".' He was survived by his son, Captain John Francis Hastings Doyle, the last Baronet of Buscombe; sold together with copied research. Subject to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium. MÉRIMÉE Prosper (1803-1870). L.A.S. "P. Mérimée", Paris June - Lot 671

MÉRIMÉE Prosper (1803-1870). L.A.S. "P. Mérimée", Paris June - Lot 671

MÉRIMÉE Prosper (1803-1870). L.A.S. "P. Mérimée", Paris June 19 [1866, to Léon PILLET]; 4 pages in-8 (copy enclosed). Beautiful letter evoking Venice and Colomba [Léon PILLET (1802-1868), journalist and librettist, directed the Opéra from 1840 to 1847; he later became a diplomat and ended his life as Consul General in Venice....] He begins by evoking his photograph, "a faithful image of my weak attractions [...] Except for the snow that fell on your sideburns and on my head, an accident unfortunately peculiar to our generation, it seems to me that we have remained standing solidly at our post amidst the ruins, as young as we were twenty or twenty-five years ago. This is no doubt due to our great virtue! [...] I'm a bit wheezy and the great men who aspire to the Académie française may claim that I'm asthmatic, but I intend to keep them waiting for a while longer. I defend myself as best I can; I spend my winters in the sun. In my opinion, it's the best medicine, and I recommend it to you. You're doing well in Venice, and you're not disgusted. You won't find a nicer city or nicer people anywhere. I'm afraid they're spoiling our beautiful palaces, which aren't too solid. [...] Is it true, by the way, that there are worrying settlements in St Marc? When I was there a few years ago, the building seemed quite sick, and I haven't heard of any repairs being made". The Paris public "is scared to death of war and moans about European discord with a truly touching sensitivity"; but the Ministry does nothing: "Our generals claim that in case of necessity we would be ready in a fortnight, according to our old habit of doing things quickly and well".He announces that "an opera of Colomba" will be performed, with music by Membrée and libretto by Hector Crémieux: "Both tell me that their little joke is excellent"... Correspondance générale, t. XIII, n° 3939.

VIGNY Alfred de (1797-1863). 7 L.A.S. "Alfred de Vigny", Par - Lot 751

VIGNY Alfred de (1797-1863). 7 L.A.S. "Alfred de Vigny", Par - Lot 751

VIGNY Alfred de (1797-1863). 7 L.A.S. "Alfred de Vigny", Paris 1852-1858, to Mme DROUYN DE LHUYS; 32 pages in 8. Very beautiful correspondence to the wife of the diplomat and minister. May 2, 1852, after the death of his correspondent's aunt. He thanks her "for having kindly fulfilled Mme la Bnne de Franca's promise. It will be doubly precious to me to have from you and from her this collection of a person who shone in a time that is no longer ours, and whose beauty will nevertheless leave us a memory that is always young through her portraits, like her easy wit through works that are both wise and passionate". He advised their retired young friend to "always reread Antigone". His death separated him too soon from these rare and precious conversations, and he wishes to renew such ties with his correspondent: "it is an exchange of ideas and noble sentiments too little sought, too little met"... August 10, 1854. He deeply regrets her absence during his last visit: she will have "eternal regrets when you know that I had passed on your request to a turntable of my acquaintance who had called Romeo, and he came with me to tell you news of Juliet, who does not seem too unhappy where she is, according to the account he gave me in his ear". When will he return? He can't answer, "these poor young spirits have their whims independent of ours, they are so pretty that they are self-sufficient and hardly come one without the other". He asks her for news of this "very pretty living woman who, locked up as she is in a large castle, like Sleeping Beauty, writes from there the most witty letters in the world"... 1855. January 16. He sends her some little books "which are not quite mass books, but which perhaps resemble them in a few pages". He does not enter her house, "since I do not have my pistols with me and I could not kill your people today, as is necessary to enter and as is agreed". He has not included Cinq-Mars with all the "angels, saints and martyrs", as it is in reprint and he will send it to her with another book "by the same hand and which you may not know". He is very interested in China, the Chinese, and in the "courageous missionary" whose work he reads... February 25. He sends him "all Mr. Abbé HUC's mandarins, with their fans, their parasols, their dragons, their beautiful curtseys, their goat-footed women and their singular wisdom". He met this missionary at the Institute, "busy with new work and delighted to have surprised a correspondence between Queen Marguerite, wife of St. Louis, and a young Chinese Christian, already a Christian in 1230!"... July 15, about DROUYN DE LHUYS's resignation from the government. Vigny leads "a hermit's life, where one always wears a hood over one's eyes. I am therefore still unaware of the causes of this retirement, so unexpected and so regrettable for those who reflect on the void that must be left everywhere by such a rare spirit as that which has just left the external affairs of the Empire". It seemed to him "the date of a new phase in European events", and he was deeply moved by such a swift decision... He asked his friend to pray on Thursday for "our good Chinese missionary", whom he had succeeded in bringing out of the darkness, and for whom he was going to fight (to win him the Montyon prize): "The day is set for a second battle in which I will again break more than one lance for him against French mandarins who are more severe than those of the Middle Kingdom. [...] I will feel equipped with all the arguments that should lead the Académie Française to do solemn justice to one of these good priests who expose themselves to martyrdom to teach these poor old children of the Orient that their mothers and sisters have a soul, something they do not yet want to believe"... July 23, 1857. He had pointed out to his husband "the painful and intolerable life of one of the soldiers in the army of Diplomacy, less wealthy than the soldiers in the army whose pay is enough to live on". He is sorry for the poor diplomat's young wife's insistence, but remains moved by her despair... He hopes to visit them soon at their beautiful Amblainvilliers countryside as soon as possible... February 1, 1858. He regrets not being able to spend "an hour as pleasant as the one spent at your home"...

Feigen & Co., Sir David Wilkie 1785-1841, 13 October - 25 November 1994, no. 16 Engraved: Abraham, Raimbach, 1819 William Greatbach, circa 1848-50 This painting was commissioned by Samuel Dobrée, a distinguished bibliophile and collector of modern masters, who had purchased Wilkie's Letter of Introduction, exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1814. In January 1818 Dobrée asked Wilkie for illustrations for his Book of Death, an anthology of the deaths of more than 200 notable persons drawn from Chamber's Encyclopaedia. As the work was of an historical genre Wilkie suggested Thomas Stothard (1755-1834) as a more appropriate artist, but as this was not forthcoming finally Wilkie agreed to help him. The result was the present painting and The Death of the Chevalier Bayard, though only the present work was used as the basis for an engraving by Raimbach, published in 1819. The present work shows the influence of Titian upon Wilkie at this date in both composition and particularly in colour palette. In 1817 and 1818, Wilkie was copying works by Titian in private collections or on loan to National Gallery and National Galley of Scotland. Sir Philip Sidney, poet and diplomat was appointed Governor of Flushing by Queen Elizabeth in 1585, he was shot during the attack on a Spanish convoy, had managed to ride back to camp, but died from his wounds three weeks later. Wilkie in his depiction of the scene technically shows the moment after he has been shot. Dobrée's source for the death was Chalmers's revised edition of The General Biographical Dictionary, XXVII, 1816, p. 510, 'As Sir Philip was returning from the field of battle, pale, languid, and thirsty, with excess of bleeding, he asked for water to quench his thirst - the water was brought, and no sooner reached his lips than he resigned it to a dying soldier, whose ghastly countenance attracted his notice, speaking these words: " This man's necessity is greater than mine."' The noble moral of Sidney's worthiness, even in death, often quoted. A related drawing was offered Christie's, Scotland, 30 October 2003, lot 8. We are grateful to Alex Kidson for his help in preparing this catalogue entry. The work will be included in Hamish Miles' forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the work of David Wilkie. ‡, ‡ SIR DAVID WILKIE (SCOTTISH 1785-1841), THE DEATH OF SIR PHILIP SIDNEY, ‡ SIR DAVID WILKIE (SCOTTISH 1785-1841) THE DEATH OF SIR PHILIP SIDNEY Oil on panel 36 x 25cm (14 x 9¾ in.), Provenance:, Provenance: Commissioned from the artist by Samuel Dobrée (1759-1827), 1818 Thence by descent to his son Bonamy Dobrée (1794-1863), by 1842 Thence by descent to his son Bonamy Dobrée (1818-1907) Thence by descent to his son Bonamy Dobrée, Jr. (1863-1891) Thence by descent to his son Professor Bonamy Dobrée (1891-1974) By whom sold, London, Sotheby's, 19 June 1957, lot 37 There acquired by Harvey Smythe, London By whom subsequently returned to Sotheby's and to Professor Bonamy Dobrée Thence by descent to Georgina Dobrée (1930-2008), London By whom anonymously sold, London, Sotheby's, London, 14 November 1990, lot 62 There acquired by Richard L. A FABULOUS AND RARE 17TH CENTURY MODEL OF THE CHURCH OF THE ...

A FABULOUS AND RARE 17TH CENTURY MODEL OF THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE, JERUSALEM. In olivewood, intricately inlaid with mother-of-pearl, bone and ebony with rosettes, lozenges and stellar motifs, with removable sections, the main dome lifting to reveal the interior, the central tower surrounded by four panels inscribed in Latin with the four points of the compass, in front of the main entrance an inlaid design of the Jerusalem crossmade up of numerous removable sections, the upper section inscribed Oriens, Meridies, Septentrio, Occidens the interior also inlaid, 46cm wide, 46cm deep, 33.5cm high Also together a second model of the S Maria Mater Christi, decorated in a conforming manner, a removal lid opening to reveal the interior model, 20cm long, 14cm wide, 6.5cm high Footnotes Numerous similar models are to be found in various collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum. There are two models in the British Museum collection, one of which was bequeathed by Sir Hans Sloane. It is listed in the Hans Sloane Manuscript Catalogue: 'The model of the temple of the Sepulchre of our Lord Jesus Christ & of Mount Calvary in Jerusalem - with an explication of the same, beads, measures &c.' Sloane had another model of "The model of the temple at Bethlehem" with the price he had paid for it, £5, 7 shillings and 6 pence. These models are all of similar form and were probably made in the Holy Land itself. They record the rebuilding of the tomb and Church by Boniface of Ragusa in 1555 and appear from the early 17th century onwards. They appear to be related to drawings of the church made by the architect and Franciscan Bernadino Amico in the 1590s, for model makers to use. These models were probably made in Bethlehem under Franciscan supervision as gifts for diplomats and rulers and as souvenirs for grand tourists. There is an example of one recorded in the Danish Kunstkammer in 1674 and another is datable to the same period as it appears on the arms of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza.
