Ludovico Guicciardini (1521–1589) – Town Hall of Vlissingen (Domus

Ludovico Guicciardini (1521–1589) – Town Hall of Vlissingen (Domus

This engraving is a highly detailed architectural view of the Town Hall of Vlissingen (Flushing), Netherlands (Zeeland). The view is a precise elevation of the Renaissance-style facade, identified by the title Domus Senatoria Vlissingensis (Senatorial House of Vlissingen). The building is distinguished by its repetitive window bays, tiered structure, arched lower arcade, and ornate gable work, topped by decorative turrets and a central tower featuring a finial figure. This topographical print details the prominent civic architecture of the city and originates from an edition of Guicciardini's comprehensive geographical work. Ludovico Guicciardini was an Italian merchant, diplomat, and historian from Florence who lived and worked in Antwerp in the Spanish Netherlands for decades. He is famous for his comprehensive geographical and historical description of the Low Countries, the Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi (Description of all the Low Countries), first published in 1567. This work was a bestseller of the time, continually revised and reissued with numerous maps and city views throughout the late 16th and 17th centuries, making him a critical figure in introducing the region's geography and culture to a wider European audience. Artist or Maker: Ludovico Guicciardini Dimensions: Approximately 30 × 35 cm Medium: Engraving Date: Circa 1625–1648 Condition Report: This work is in good condition overall. Ludovico Guicciardini (1521–1589) – Map of Belgium - Plan of Ostend

Ludovico Guicciardini (1521–1589) – Map of Belgium - Plan of Ostend

This engraving is a precise bird's-eye plan of the fortified coastal city of Ostend, Belgium. The map focuses on the complex, modern fortifications characterized by sharp, angled bastions designed for defense, with the sea visible to the left. The internal street network, buildings, and a harbor are clearly delineated within the defensive walls. The cartouche in the lower right corner features Latin text describing the city as being of "wonderful beauty" ( Mirae Pulchritudinis ) and mentions its recovery or rebuilding in the years of the Kingdom of Naples ( Naples annis ), a reference to the city's strategic importance during the Eighty Years' War. This plate is a key topographical illustration from an edition of Guicciardini's geographical work. Ludovico Guicciardini was an Italian merchant, diplomat, and historian. He is most famous for authoring the Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi (Description of all the Low Countries), first published in 1567. This comprehensive work, which covered all provinces of the Low Countries (including parts of what is now northern France and Belgium), was widely reprinted throughout the 17th century by various publishers and relied heavily on detailed engraved city plans and maps such as this one. Artist or Maker: Ludovico Guicciardini Dimensions: Approximately 26 × 33 cm Medium: Engraving Date: Circa 1625–1648 Condition Report: This work is in good condition overall. There may be a few minor imperfections or fox or mottled marks to be expected with age. Ludovico Guicciardini (1521–1589) – Map of France - Valenciennes /

This engraving is a highly detailed antique map providing a bird's-eye plan of the city of Valenciennes, France. The plan illustrates the city's street network, fortifications, and surrounding landscape, with the Scheldt River passing through the center. The town is identified at the top as VALECIENNE and in the lower cartouche with a Latin description noting its former importance as an elegant city in Flanders. The cartouche is further decorated with two coats of arms in the upper corners and a small scale. This map served as a key topographical illustration for historical and geographical works on the Low Countries. Ludovico Guicciardini was an Italian merchant, diplomat, and historian. Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur (1757–1810) – Armenian Woman (Armenienne)

Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur (1757–1810) – Armenian Woman (Armenienne)

This ethnographic figure study, titled Armenienne , depicts a woman dressed in the distinctive traditional attire of the Armenian community of Western Asia/Caucasus. The figure wears a long, fur-trimmed green over-robe with patterned cuffs, a white head covering wrapped around a red cap, and a necklace. The illustration captures the typical appearance and costume associated with the region as documented by European travelers. This print originates from Encyclopédie des voyages ( Encyclopedia of Voyages ), a multi-volume French compendium designed to visually record the distinctive dress, customs, and appearance of peoples from across the globe in the late 18th century. Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur was a French writer, diplomat, and ethnographic compiler of the Enlightenment period. He is best known for devising and publishing the Encyclopédie des voyages , a monumental work that featured hundreds of plates illustrating the world’s inhabitants. Through this project, Grasset directed the production of thousands of visual records, aiming to create a systematic and comprehensive visual record of human cultures. Artist or Maker: Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur Dimensions: Approximately 20 × 14 cm Medium: Hand-coloured Engraving Date: Circa 1796 Condition Report: This work is in good condition overall. RARE CHINESE JINGDEZHEN 'KAISEKI' DISHES - JAPANESE INTEREST...

RARE CHINESE JINGDEZHEN 'KAISEKI' DISHES - JAPANESE INTEREST...

RARE CHINESE JINGDEZHEN 'KAISEKI' DISHES - JAPANESE INTEREST. A rare set of four Jingdezhen celadon diamond-shaped kaiseki dishes, made for the Japanese market, 17th century, each with four tapering feet, the interior carved in relief with a chilong, pomegranate, lotus and peony respectively and covered in a pale celadon glaze. Some restoration and chips, 18cms and 17.5cms across *Provenance: Thomas Maitland Snow (1890-1997) thence by descent through the family. Thomas Maitland Snow was a British diplomat who was educated at Winchester College and New College, Oxford and graduated in Classics. He joined the Foreign Office in 1914 and his early postings took him to Oslo, Athens, Bern, Madrid, Warsaw and Tokyo. He was the British Minister to Cuba from 1935-1937, Finland 1937-1940, Colombia 1941-1945 and Switzerland from 1946-1949. The vendor’s father recounted his first memory of his father’s posting (to Cuba), in Christopher Hull’s British Diplomacy and US Hegemony in Cuba 1898-1964. It also describes how he was reprimanded on his first day at his office in London in 1914 as he had been at Sotheby’s to bid on a piece of amber, but this in fact stood in him good stead and he was invited to lunch by his superior. The host of this lunch was the renowned Chinese art collector - George Eumorfopoulos (Humor Populus (sic)) (1863-1939), whom forged a great friendship with. He recounts of a story in the book where Snow was to view a large collection of Song and Tang ceramics in the warehouse of the importer and private banking firm - Ralli Brothers, who Eumorfopoulos worked for. A large number of these ceramics had come on to the market due to the establishment of new lines of the Chinese Railways by the Republican Government (1911-1949). Snow purchased some valuable piece from Eumorfopoulos as well as from auction houses (most likely through local dealers) in Tokyo when he was posted there before World War II. This would tie in with these dishes, which were made for the Japanese market and used for sweetmeats during their tea ceremonies. These sets of dishes are usually known in groups of five. The carving on them, especially the one of the chilong, is quite similar to that seen on Kangxi period (1662-1722) brushpots, so the designs of these dishes are most likely a pre-curser to these.
