[HANCARVILLE, Pierre-Francois Hugues, dit le Baron d']. - Lot 307

[HANCARVILLE, Pierre-Francois Hugues, dit le Baron d']. - Lot 307

[HANCARVILLE, Pierre-Francois Hugues, dit le Baron d']. [Veneres et Priapi] Veneres uti observantur in gemmis antiquis. Lugd. Batavorum [London], s.d. [ca. 1777]. Two works bound in one in-12 volume (11 x 17.5 cm). Contemporary bottle morocco basane, smooth spine, framed with gilt fillet and cold-stamped Greek garland on boards, gilt title, gilt roulette on edges, cold-stamped garland on spandrels. 72 pp. in continuous pagination, interfoliated with an exciting series of 70 free and very free engraved erotic cameo vignettes and 2 engraved title-frontispieces. Text in English. Famous 18th-century work, composed of 70 erotic scenes said to have been engraved after cameos, intaglios or antique sculptures. Complete with engravings and 2 engraved title-frontispices, bringing the number of prints to 72. Copies complete with all plates are rare, as Cohen points out: "Brunet indicates 25 to 30 plates, which is inaccurate. We believe, moreover, that the number differs from copy to copy; for example, the old morocco copy owned by Baron Portalis, contains the two titles and 66 plates". An unusual copy, as it was watercolored in pink at the time: each gem or proof was finely colored in a pastel shade of pink. Colorized copies are very rare (Pia), and we generally only come across multi-hued ways to achieve a naturalistic rendering. The work was first published in Naples, where its title caused the author some inconvenience. Our edition is the second, and although it is listed in Leiden, it was made in London (text and preface are entirely in black, unlike the 1st, from Naples, which is in red and black). A brilliant Fregolian character, Pierre-François Hugues (1719-1805), the so-called Baron d'Hancarville, was a spy, archaeologist, diplomat, historian, archivist and essayist, all driven by a taste for adventure. In Italy, he worked on cataloguing the antique collection of Sir Hamilton, British ambassador to Naples between 1764 and 1776. It is likely that he drew inspiration for the images in this collection of erotica, which he claimed to have been taken from real antique medallions. Cohen, 476. Pia, L'Enfer, 1487. Binding slightly rubbed. A few scattered stains. Slight discharge to each plate. CURIOSA. EROTICA.

CHINA - Lot 75

CHINA - Lot 75

CHINA 17th CENTURY Lacquered wood statue of Buddha seated in padmasana, hands resting on legs in dhyana mudra. He is dressed in a monastic robe covering both shoulders and falling in elegant folds. The naked torso is adorned with a senestrogyr swastika. The face is full, with a serene expression, the hair styled in delicate swirling curls and with the ushnisha at the front. He is accompanied by five small attendants (offering bearers, luohan and bodhisattva) in gilded lacquered wood. H. 24 cm Provenance : - Collected in China by Baron Albert d'Anthoüard de Wasservas (1861-1944), diplomat, embassy secretary in Peking in 1898. - By posterity to this day. Notice: NOTE This gilded lacquered wood Buddha illustrates the virtuosity of Chinese sculpture during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Created with remarkable care, it demonstrates a subtle balance between decorative refinement and profound spirituality. Shakyamuni Buddha is depicted in a meditative posture, wrapped in an ample mantle (sanghati) whose folds unfold with suppleness, forming delicate curls that fall over the shoulders. The draping of the garment contrasts with the stylization and roundness of the face and barrel. The use of gilded lacquer on wood flourished during the Ming dynasty, when it was widely employed in the production of religious effigies. Its use continued into the early years of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Our piece is to be compared with a statue in a similar style, from the Cheng Huan collection of Buddhist Art, dispersed at the "Fine Chinese Art" sale, Bonhams, London on May 14, 2015 (lot 51).

A MID 20TH CENTURY DIAMOND, OPAL, AND RUBY TIARA

A MID 20TH CENTURY DIAMOND, OPAL, AND RUBY TIARA

A MID 20TH CENTURY DIAMOND, OPAL, AND RUBY TIARA The scrolled tiara with graduated old cut diamond and cabochon opal clusters, with further rose and old mine cut diamond accented settings, with cabochon, circular and step cut ruby accents, the principal oval cluster removes from the setting, with additional screw in brooch fitting, the two smaller diamond and opal clusters unscrew, with fold out stud fittings, diamonds approximately 10.32 carats total, unmarked, in a partial box, with sticker verso stating Marquis Jean P. De Chambrun, Vernon Manor Hotel, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219 Size/dimensions: the front section 7.8cm high, principal opal, diamond and ruby cluster 3.8cm long Gross weight: 211.4 grams Provenance: The Late Jean Pierre François Joseph Pineton de Chambrun, Marquis de Chambrun, Marquis d'Amefreville (1903 - 2004) and Muriel, Marquise de Chambrun. Thence by family descent Jean Pierre Pineton was the eldest son of French politician and diplomat Charles Louis Antoine Pierre Gilbert Pineton de Chambrun (1865-1954) and his American wife, Margaret Rives Nichols (1872-1949). The de Chambrun family had a distinguished history as important French politicians in the French Senate and French Chamber of Deputies and were direct descendants of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. Margaret Rives Nichols was born into the 19th century millionaire Longworth Storer family in Cincinnati. Although profoundly deaf, Jean Pierre studied biochemistry at the Institut Pasteur and art at the Horace Vernet school. As a member of at the Cercle de l'Union Artistique in France, Jean Pierre became an acclaimed painter and designer of jewellery, wrought iron and crystal for Baccarat. He married his first wife the French heiress, Gisèle Hugot-Gratry (1909-2005), in the late 1920s and they had three sons together. The family left France during World War II as Jean Pierre was a staunch opponent of the wartime Vichy Government in France, and they settled in Cincinnati for the duration of the war. After the war Gisèle returned to France with their sons and their marriage ended in divorce. Jean Pierre lived in Lucca in Northern Italy with his sister Marthe de Chambrun, Principessa Ruspoli-Poggio Suasa, in the 1950s although they subsequently moved to Tangier. Whilst living in Tangier Jean Pierre was introduced to Muriel McIntosh Villar. Muriel had moved to Tangier after the war, having lost her first husband during the Malayan Emergency, to live with her retired Sergeant Major father. Muriel and Jean Pierre married in 1963 and would spend their 40 year marriage between France, the United States and the Algarve in Portugal. When they stayed in America between the late 1960s and early 1970s, they would always stay at Vernon Manor Hotel in Clifton, Cincinnati. Interestingly the base of the tiara box offered with the tiara has a label stating the Marquis of Chambrun's name and confirming the address as the Vernon Manor Hotel. Jean Pierre and Muriel toured America lecturing about his ancestor the Marquis de Lafayette, and Lafayette's role in defeating the British during the American Revolution and War of independence. Muriel also became a celebrated poetess and won several awards including Ohio Poet of the year in 1976 for her Book Of Poems "Sudden Spring", and an award from Cincinnati University in 1970 for her first book "Salisbury Cathedral". Jean Pierre and Muriel were fêted by American society at large, and were known to several American President's including Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George Bush Junior for their work in promoting Franco-American relations. Condition Report: The seven graduated opal and diamond clusters appear to have originally been part of an earlier piece, and have been soldered onto the gold scrolling tiara. There is evidence of lead solder being used to attach these clusters, but the soldering is all very tidy. The clusters are in our opinion late 19th century/early 20th century. The removable central panel and earring clusters were originally fixed to the body of the tiara, and then the bar supports and screw in fittings later added in order to make the tiara convertible. There are very small areas of lead solder repair below the cluster to the central front panel, one of the joins is visible to the front of the tiara. The opals have surface reaching and internal crazing that is visible to the naked eye, no chips nicks or scuffs. The diamonds are all present and correct, bright and lively, mostly VS-SI, some with inclusions visible with a 10x loupe. One of the smaller diamonds is chipped. The rubies are all present and correct, well matched in colour, one square cut ruby is cracked right through. The setting is unmarked and remains untested Condition Report Disclaimer, A MID 20TH CENTURY DIAMOND, OPAL, AND RUBY TIARA, The scrolled tiara with graduated old cut diamond and cabochon opal clusters, with further rose and old mine cut diamond accented settings, with cabochon, circular and step cut ruby accents, the principal oval cluster removes from the setting, with additional screw in brooch fitting, the two smaller diamond and opal clusters unscrew, with fold out stud fittings, diamonds approximately 10.32 carats total, unmarked, in a partial box, with sticker verso stating Marquis Jean P. [PASCAL, Blaise (1623-1662)]

[PASCAL, Blaise (1623-1662)]

139 ; PMM, n°140 : "the first example of French prose as we know it today, perfectly finished in form, varied in style, and on a subject of universal importance. Marvel Boy (2000) 1 VF- 7.5

Marvel Boy (2000) 1 VF- 7.5

Grant Morrison script; J.G. Jones art. THE SCOOP: The dream team of writer Grant Morrison (JLA) and J.G. Jones (BLACK WIDOW) unleash a new Marvel hero for the 21st Century! THE STORY: Forget everything you know about the name Marvel Boy! Burn the toga and the headband! Shred the cape and wave goodbye to Uranus! This is a very different character. The new Marvel Boy is Noh-Varr, the youngest member of a Kree Diplomatic team. After voyaging for years, these alien super heroes reach Earth, only to be blown out of the sky. Only Noh-Varr survives, and is captured and tortured by the mysterious Midas Organization. Escaping, he vows vengeance on all mankind. But with Morrison weaving this tale, don't expect cliche superheroics or a squeaky clean protagonist. Instead, get ready for Dr. Midas, a criminal billionare who's so obsessed with Cosmic Rays that he bathes in them... Exterminatrix, who arrives in issue #3 to make life heaven and hell for Marvel Boy... the Plex Intelligence, a clone of the Supreme Intelligence, but with Multiple Personality options... Hexus, the Living Corporation... Bannermen, a trio of U.N. super soldiers whose bodies are laced with adamantium and enhanced by gamma-rays... and have we talked about our ticked off protagonist yet? Hey, why don't we just listen to the words of Morrison instead? THE WRITER SPEAKS: "We're always being told that super hero books are nothing but adolescent power fantasies. Fine. Here comes the ultimate adolescent power fantasy! The Marvel Style began with the Sub-Mariner... and like Bill Everett's Prince Namor, I wanted my hero to be an outcast, a fiery rebel with an appetite for righteous mass destruction. Marvel Boy is not one of the Kree we're familiar with from books like AVENGERS and CAPTAIN MARVEL. He's a super diplomat who's spent a few years adventuring across numerous alternate realities and bizarre dimensions. Now, in the Marvel Universe, he must use all of his skills and powers just to stay alive and continue his one-man guerrila war against our planet. Like Marvel Boy himself, I'm a newcomer to this Universe and I'm having fun using stuff like S.H.I.E.L.D. or the Mindless Ones and finding new takes on it, things we haven't seen or thought before. I got sick of seeing what I call ?DadComics.' It's time to say goodbye to all those boring, nostalgic books. We're here to trash the past and make something new that's relevant to our lives today." ? THE FORMAT: Six-issue monthly limited series. Cover price $2.99. Grade: VF- 7.5 explanation of grade Condition: Used (collectible)
