"Jacob Cats Out LXXVII Iaren." This engraving features a central oval portrait of the Dutch author Jacob Cats, depicted in a scholarly gown and skullcap. The portrait is surrounded by an elaborate border of frolicking putti holding scrolls that name various works from his literary career, such as Houwelyck and Sinn' en Minne-beelden. This print serves as the frontispiece to the collected works titled Alle de Wercken, published in Amsterdam by Jan Jacobsz Schipper in 1658. The composition was designed by Adriaen Pietersz. van de Venne and engraved by Michael Mousyn, celebrating Cats' immense cultural legacy during the Dutch Golden Age. Jacob Cats was a highly influential Dutch poet, jurist, and diplomat who achieved widespread fame for his didactic emblem books. His ability to blend moral and religious instruction with engaging verse made his work a staple of Dutch household life, earning him the nickname Father Cats. Professionally, he rose to the highest levels of political power, serving as the Grand Pensionary of Holland. His collaboration with artists like Van de Venne ensured that his moral messages were accompanied by high-quality visual allegories that defined the aesthetic of his era. "Anna Maria a Schurman." This engraving features a central oval portrait of the renowned Dutch scholar Anna Maria van Schurman, depicted in a dark bodice with a prominent white lace collar and a decorative brooch. The portrait is flanked by two putti; the upper figure holds a large scroll with a lengthy Latin inscription, while the lower figure holds a small open book. This print is an illustrative plate from the collected works titled Alle de Wercken by Jacob Cats. It was published in Amsterdam by Jan Jacobsz Schipper in 1658. The composition honors Van Schurman’s reputation as the most learned woman of her age, a sentiment frequently celebrated by her contemporary and friend, Jacob Cats. Jacob Cats was a highly influential Dutch poet, jurist, and diplomat who became one of the most widely read authors of the Dutch Golden Age. He is primarily remembered for his emblem books, which combined moralizing verse with intricate illustrations to provide guidance on social, religious, and domestic life. His work was so deeply embedded in Dutch culture that he was affectionately known as Father Cats, as his books were common fixtures in almost every household in the Netherlands. In addition to his literary fame, he achieved significant political status, serving as the Grand Pensionary of Holland and playing a major role in the diplomatic affairs of the Dutch Republic. for up to eight people, led by the Duchess of Argyll or a senior guide, including access to the gardens and two further private rooms (not usually on display), followed by tea in the private dining room with the Duchess of Argyll (mutual diaries permitting, or in the tearoom) together with a signed guide book. Valid until October 2027. Sitting on the shores of Loch Fyne, surrounded by the majesty of the West Highlands of Scotland, Inveraray Castle has been the home of the Dukes of Argyll since the 1700s and the area has been the seat of the Clan Campbell since the 1200s. Inspired by a sketch by Vanburgh, built by Roger Morris and Roger Mylne, and William, John and Robert Adam, the castle took over forty years to complete, and the dramatic Gothic, Palladian and Baroque result is very much what you see today. The interiors reflect the family’s pivotal role throughout Scottish and British history with a breathtakingly high ceiling and a collection of arms and armoury used in various Campbell battles, contrasted with elegant French furniture and tapestries, family portraits and exquisite hand-painted ceilings and walls. The award-winning castle gardens are renowned for the magnificent rhododendrons and azaleas, which flourish in the Gulf Stream climate, as well as the impressive trees including those planted by Queen Victoria while staying with her daughter Princess Louise who was married to the 9th Duke. The castle is now a family home to the current Duke, Torquhil and his family, as well as one of Scotland’s leading tourist destinations and used for filming ('Downton Abbey', 'The Diplomat', 'A Very British Scandal') and events.
