Artist: Tokuriki Tomikichirō (徳力富吉郎, 1902–2000) Title: Fujisan (富士山) — "Mount Fuji" Date: c. 1980s (late Shōwa) Edition: Hand-signed by the artist in pencil Format: Shikishi-ban (near-square sheet), approx. 27.5 × 24.5 cm Technique: Nishiki-e (colour woodblock) on washi Paper & condition Excellent. Full margins, unfaded, unbacked, no folds or foxing. The colours are noticeably richer in hand than any photograph conveys. About the print Tokuriki Tomikichirō was the twelfth generation of a Kyoto family of painters attached to the Hongan-ji, and one of the key figures in modern Kyoto printmaking. He trained at the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting, graduating in 1924. He turned to the woodblock in 1929 under the influence of Hiratsuka Un'ichi and became a leader of the sōsaku hanga (creative print) movement in Kyoto. He also designed shin hanga landscapes for the wider market, and Mount Fuji was a subject he returned to throughout his career, including in a 1941 set of Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji. After the war he founded his own publishing house, Matsukyū, which published his work and that of other artists and trained a generation of carvers and printers.
