The brooch with pendant suspensions on fine chains was the typical piece of jewelry of the late Biedermeier period. In the years around 1848, for example, the court jeweler Friedrich Roediger (1818-1881), the founder of the jewelry factory of the same name and inventor of the foxtail chain, created a whole series of such designs, a whole sheet full of which has been preserved to this day in the Hanau Drawing Academy (see illustration). The present example is decorated with rich gold ornamentation, which displays baroque forms in the taste of the time. The body of the brooch is made of foam gold, typical of the period, i.e. a fine sheet of gold stamped into shape was stabilized by a golden base. This made it possible to create particularly splendid shapes using only a small amount of material. Brooches of this type are often filled with resin - but not in this case. The brooch is hollow and therefore pleasantly light. The showpiece of the brooch is a flower made of light blue, natural aquamarines. This high-quality brooch, which was almost certainly made in Germany, came to us from Rudolstadt. The illustration from Brigitte Marquardt: Schmuck.
