ANCIENT INDO-TIBETAN BANDED AGATE BEAD — Natural Eye Pattern A large and striking ancient banded agate bead of the type traded across the Himalayan belt — known in the trade as Indo-Tibetan or Himalayan banded agate. Natural growth layers within the stone have formed concentric "eye" rings around each end of the drilled perforation, along with bold chevron and zigzag banding running the length of the bead. These are entirely natural formations within the agate itself, not carved or applied. A NOTE ON COLOR — LIKELY NATURAL, UNTREATED TONE Most banded agate of this kind on the market has been darkened using the traditional honey/sugar-and-acid method, which turns the stone's background nearly black to sharpen the contrast of its white banding. This bead instead shows a soft, pale cream and gray palette with gentle natural red-brown mineral staining — the opposite of what that treatment produces. For that reason, we believe this bead very likely retains its natural, untreated color, rather than having undergone the traditional blackening enhancement. PLEASE NOTE — THIS IS A SINGLE LOOSE BEAD As shown, this is one individual ancient bead, sold loose and unmounted, exactly as it survives today. A substantial, statement-making focal piece — ideal as a pendant, threaded as the centerpiece of a necklace with other ancient beads, or kept as a standalone collector's piece. THE DETAILS THAT MATTER Beads of this type are dated broadly to the ancient trade-bead era, circa 500 BCE – 1000 CE, and are found across the Himalayan belt — India, Tibet, Nepal, China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan — carried along ancient trade and pilgrimage routes through Central and Western Asia. At 41mm long, this is a notably large example, with the natural eye and chevron patterning present and consistent at both ends — clear evidence of genuine geological banding rather than a modern reproduction. The surface shows a deep, hand-polished sheen consistent with age and handling.
