Background Information: This bronze antoninianus was issued during the reign of Probus, Roman emperor from A.D. 276 to 282. The obverse shows a radiate and cuirassed bust of the emperor facing right, surrounded by the legend IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG, identifying Probus and expressing his imperial titles. The reverse carries the legend SOLI INVICTO, “To the Unconquered Sun”, and depicts Sol, the Roman solar deity, associated with a quadriga or four-horse chariot. Sol Invictus occupied an important position in later 3rd-century imperial ideology, and the imagery communicated themes of divine favour, victory and the enduring power of the emperor. Coins of Probus were produced on a large scale within the organised Roman imperial minting system and circulated throughout the provinces as everyday currency. Their varied portraits and reverse types also served as an effective medium for communicating imperial authority, military success and religious symbolism to soldiers and civilians across the Empire. Probus ruled during a period in which the Roman Empire was recovering from the political and military instability of the 3rd century. His coinage belongs to this important phase of renewed imperial consolidation. As a coin made for everyday circulation, this piece provides a direct and tangible connection to the economic, religious and political life of the later Roman Empire."
