According to the previous owner, the object had previously formed part of a private collection in the Netherlands; the date of this earlier ownership is unknown. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This Roman bronze statuette presents a striking combination of religious and military imagery: an eagle standing above a horned bull’s head, which rests upon a rectangular altar-like base. The eagle is shown upright with folded wings, while the bull is represented principally by its head and prominent horns. Together these elements form a compact composition rooted in the symbolic language of the Roman Imperial world. The eagle, or aquila, was one of the most important symbols of Rome. Closely associated with Jupiter, supreme god of the Roman pantheon, it also became the principal emblem of the Roman legion. Each legion possessed an aquila carried by the aquilifer, and the standard embodied the honour and identity of the unit. Its loss in battle was regarded as a serious disgrace, while the recovery of captured standards could be celebrated as an important political and military achievement. The bull likewise occupied an important position in Roman religious and military culture. Bulls were prestigious sacrificial animals and featured prominently in ceremonies offered to the gods. The animal also appeared among the emblems associated with individual Roman legions. In this statuette, however, the combination of eagle, bull’s head and altar may have had a broader religious or military significance, and without a documented archaeological context it is not possible to associate the piece securely with a particular legion or cult. Small bronzes of this kind formed part of a well-established Roman tradition of portable religious and symbolic imagery. They could be displayed in domestic shrines, military environments or other settings in which divine protection and allegiance were expressed. Bronze figures were generally cast, often by the lost-wax process, and subsequently finished by hand. The hollow base visible on this example reflects the practical casting methods employed by Roman metalworkers. Dating broadly to the 1st–3rd century A.D., the statuette belongs to the Roman Imperial period, when the eagle was among the most immediately recognisable symbols of Roman military authority and Jupiter’s divine power. The combination of eagle, sacrificial bull imagery and altar creates a particularly evocative expression of Roman religious and military symbolism, providing a tangible connection to the beliefs and visual culture of the Roman Empire."})})))?} }}}) }}}} }}}} {
