WUNDERLICH, PAUL (1927-2010) "Großer Minotauros" 1989

Bronze, teilweise grün patiniert und teilweise poliert. 185 x 29 x 45,5 cm. Jahrhunderts. Goldfarbene Partien minimal fleckig. Insgesamt in einem sehr guten, originalen Erhaltungszustand. Dimensions: 185 × 29 × 45.5 cm. Signed, dated and numbered on the edge of the plinth: Wunderlich 89 6/1000. The monumental bronze sculpture “Großer Minotauros” is one of the most iconic major sculptural works of Paul Wunderlich’s mature oeuvre. One of the most important representatives of post-war fantastical-surrealist art, the artist takes up the central mythological motif of the ancient bull-man and translates it into his characteristically elegant, aestheticized formal language. In the masterful juxtaposition of dark green-patinated and highly polished, gold-shimmering surfaces, Wunderlich combines primal animal force with a cool, aristocratic attitude. The extremely elongated proportions lend the figure a sacred yet sublime presence. The design artfully combines the archaic mythology of antiquity with the precise refinement of Art Deco and modern 20th-century sculpture. Gold-colored areas show minimal spotting. Overall, the sculpture is in very good original condition.
