Wooden pedestal with a winged lion figure. Oriental School, 19th century

Descriptio Carved and polychrome rosewood. This unique pedestal displays a winged lion carved with fantastic expressiveness, with striking glass eyes on its head. The sculpture’s back supports a square upper platform, allowing it to be used as a sculptural support or altarpiece. The piece combines symbolic power and technical refinement, reminiscent of the medieval bestiary reinterpreted by 19th-century Portuguese colonial schools, particularly in Asia and Africa. The meticulous carving of the fur, the outstretched wings, and the vivid facial expression denote an attention to detail that lends the whole an intense stage presence. 101 x 39 x 40 cm. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
