Wooden Noh mask of Hannya 般若 - Inoue Corporation (Kyoto)...

Incredible and refined Japanese Noh theatre mask (Nō) depicting Hannya (般若), the legendary demon embodying the jealousy, anger, and pain of a woman transformed by resentment. This exceptional art piece was crafted by the Inoue Corporation of Kyoto, renowned worldwide for producing traditional masks of the highest quality. Their production techniques have been passed down since the Muromachi period. The square seal impressed hot on the black-lacquered back bears the signature of their master carver Ohoshima Kenjyu (大島健寿). The author's signature guarantees this lot exceptional collectible value and authenticity. The mask stands out for its prominently well-proportioned horns, the wide-open eyes with a fierce expression, and an open mouth revealing gilded teeth and fangs. The eyes and the upper part of the teeth are coated with a brass leaf. The work is sold as a complete and exclusive collectible set, enriched with all of its original import accessories: • The original wooden protective box (Tomobako) with calligraphic inscription on the lid. • The splendid and rare protective silk brocade case (Fukusa), finely finished, sewn and decorated with floral motifs and provided with a purple cord. • The official brochure from the Inoue Corporation of Kyoto (with the company’s historical contacts). • The original English-language document explaining the spiritual value infused by the carver into the mask and its various decorative or ceremonial uses, hand-signed in original by the company’s manager.
