Wooden mask with crest - Tiwara - Mali (No reserve price)

Wooden mask Cimier Tiwara – Mali This Tiwara crest mask, originating from the Bambara people in Mali, is an emblematic piece of the art and spirituality of this West African ethnicity. Carved in wood with great delicacy, it generally represents a stylized antelope, a symbol of fertility, agricultural labor, and harmony with nature. Worn on the top of the head during ritual dances, the Tiwara accompanies ceremonies linked to agricultural cycles, conveying essential values such as discipline, the transmission of knowledge, and respect for the earth. The elongated shapes, clean lines, and openwork motifs bear witness to the craftsmanship of the Bambara artisans, as well as their ability to translate spiritual concepts into powerful sculptural forms. Thus, this mask embodies the cultural identity and ancestral heritage of a people deeply connected to their environment. In a contemporary approach, the Tiwara crest fits into a contemporary reading of African art where antiquity engages with current aesthetics. The blend of antiquity and the contemporary is evident in the striking modernity of its lines and silhouette, which evoke forms that are almost abstract or minimalist, appreciated in contemporary art. This contemporary dimension allows us to rediscover this ritual object as a timeless sculptural work, beyond its original function. The contemporary aspect highlights the visual power and balance of the forms, while respecting its heritage and cultural significance. Thus, this mask perfectly illustrates the continuity between tradition and contemporary creation, where an ancient object becomes a lasting source of inspiration in the contemporary gaze.
