Willem de Zwart (1862-1931) - Landschap met koeien

This landscape with cows by Willem de Zwart (1862–1931) shows an open pasture, with a compact, dark group of trees and shrubs on the left. At their foot lie a few cows in the grass. On the right the composition opens to a low, distant horizon, so that the expansive sky occupies a substantial part of the image plane. The strong contrast between the almost black-brown tree group and the light sky governs the composition. The sky is composed of cream, soft ocher, gray-green, and subdued blue, laid on in short, clearly visible brushstrokes. The foreground consists of various green tones with brown and ochre accents. The cows are indicated with a few light, decisive touches. The paste-like and mobile brushwork gives the small panel a distinctly painterly character. Oil on panel, lower-left signed “W. de Zwart.” Dimensions about 13 × 18 cm; with frame about 32 × 37 × 3 cm. Provenance: private collection, F. de V., Eindhoven. Artist Biography Willem de Zwart (1862–1931) belongs to the generation of Dutch painters who built on the Hague School while developing a freer, more vigorous brushwork. At fifteen he began apprentice work with Jacob Maris; later he studied at the The Hague Academy of Visual Arts, where he met others such as George Hendrik Breitner, Isaac Israels, and Philip Zilcken. His oeuvre includes landscapes, cityscapes, genre scenes, and depictions with horses, wagons, and cattle. In particular, his direct painting style and strong light-dark contrasts are characteristic. The Rijksmuseum possesses a substantial representation of his work, including paintings, drawings, and prints; in the collection there are also several landscapes with cows and the small oil panel Hooiwagen. Kunstmuseum Den Haag also houses works by De Zwart in its collection.
