Washington, District of Columbia. Union Bank of Columbia. 1859 $5.

Washington, District of Columbia. Union Bank of Columbia. 1859 $5. PMG Very Fine 20. No. 882. Plate A. Representative of a fraudulent bank whose title was chosen as a means to imitate other banks in the district. The main attraction of this highly attractive $5 Obsolete is arguably the patented underprint used throughout the design that was later reused for the Demand Notes and Legal Tender Notes issued by the Federal government during the 1860s. Portraits of Stephen A. Douglas (right) and James Buchanan (left) are noticed as well and suggest that the organizers of this fraudulent institution were perhaps "Northern Democrats" who stayed loyal to the United States in the years that followed. Regardless of the reason behind this choice, bidders are advised that this is a rather attractive design that does well to demonstrate a strong degree of technical sophistication. PMG comments "Minor Repair." Estimate: $200 - $300. Provenance: From the Caine Collection.
