Walter Marshall Clute, American/Michigan 1870-1915, “Southern Landscape

Walter Marshall Clute American/Michigan, 1870-1915 "Southern Landscape with Moss Laden Oak Tree" oil on canvas c. 1898, signed lower right, framed. Note: Walter Marshall Clute spent time in both Mobile, Alabama and Tampa, Florida in 1898 on his way to Cuba to cover the Spanish-American War as an illustrator and special correspondent for the Chicago Daily News. Clute sketched constantly, took photographs, wrote notes and appeared to be fascinated with the war as well as the architecture and people of Cuba. This very accomplished and painterly Southern landscape depicting a moss-laden oak tree framing a field with a piercing blue sky in the distance was likely painted during his time in Alabama or Florida on his way to Cuba. Clute was a Chicago-area artist, teacher, illustrator, and critic whose career blended academic training with warm, intimate genre painting. Born in Schenectady, New York in 1870, he showed artistic promise early. He studied at the Art Students League in New York under H. Siddons Mowbray and Kenyon Cox, where he absorbed a disciplined, classical approach to art. He first supported himself as a newspaper illustrator, working in Buffalo before moving to Chicago. His most widely noticed work came during the Spanish-American War, when he went to Cuba as a correspondent and produced sketches that were praised for their vividness and accuracy. After returning to Chicago, Clute taught for many years at the School of the Art Institute and worked with other art groups. He became an active part of Chicago's art scene, serving in clubs, reviewing exhibitions, and helping organize shows. A rare canvas from Clute's brief time in the South, this painting would be a fine addition to a collection of Florida or Southern art. Reference: Dryer, Joel S., Illinois Historical Art Project.
