Walking stick - .925 silver - Sheffield 1880-1920

Elegant and unique antique British walking cane with a round silver knob (ball or knop) and a dark ebony wood shaft, placing it chronologically between the late 19th and early 20th centuries (approximately 1880–1920). They were commonly part of collectible or etiquette walking sticks from the Victorian and Edwardian era. The marks correspond to British sterling silver hallmarks that certify authenticity, purity, and origin of a piece of sterling silver (sterling silver). The Crown (City Mark) identifies that the piece was assayed and struck in the assay office of Sheffield, England. The letter "B" (Date Mark) indicates the exact year of manufacture. The Gothic or decorative typography design within this specific crowned shield places the piece in the official cycles of the Sheffield Office. The Lion Passant (Purity Mark), with its forepaw raised, is the universal British symbol certifying 92.5% silver (sterling). Finally the letters J.G & S (Maker's Mark / Sponsor's Mark) correspond to the initials of the silversmith or workshop that registered the piece. In this case, they represent the well-known Sheffield silversmith firm James Deakin & Sons (founded by James Deakin, together with his sons William, John and Albert). It was an indispensable fashion accessory for gentlemen of high society between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
