About The American photographer Virgil Apger is one of the leading portrait and studio photographers of classic Hollywood cinema. From 1931 he worked for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM), where in 1947 he assumed the leadership of the Portrait Department. His best-known subjects include film legends such as Elizabeth Taylor, Ava Gardner, Judy Garland, Clark Gable, Lana Turner and Grace Kelly. His elegant black-and-white photographs are characterized by subtle lighting, natural staging, and timeless aesthetics.
