Vintage Ring With Untreated Sapphire & Diamonds In Gold, Circa 1980

This ring in warm, shimmering yellow gold is adorned with three gemstones. Two old-cut diamonds frame a sapphire, which forms the focal point of the ring as an oval cabochon. It is a special stone because the sapphire is not only quite large (6.82 ct) and untreated, i.e. not heated. Its color is also unusual: it alternates between light and dark blue and, depending on the angle of view, natural inclusions deep within the stone shine out in a mysterious, silvery grey. Rings with gemstones that are set following the rail are called band rings or alliance rings. They were already being worn in the 19th century. However, these rings also experienced a new fashion in the second half of the 20th century. Not only their timeless appearance, but also the flush-set gemstones without prongs made them a particularly elegant accessory suitable for everyday wear throughout the decades. This ring was created around 1980. The hallmarks inside the ring band reveal that smaller diamonds were originally set in the ring when it was created. However, they were probably replaced only a short time later by the larger old-cut diamonds that are visible today. Their proportions match the sapphire perfectly. The ring is accompanied by an independent appraisal from Vienna. We acquired the ring from a larger collection of high-quality vintage jewelry from Hanover.
