Rings richly set with diamonds that present a single coloured stone in their center are called entourage rings. The best known are those with a row of equally sized diamonds around the shining, precious stone in the middle. The engagement ring for Lady Di, for example, was just such a ring, with diamonds around a sapphire. In the 1960s, however, a new form of the classic entourage ring emerged, richer and with a whole new dynamic. These rings were called ballerina rings, because the surrounding diamonds were no longer just brilliant cut diamonds, but baguette cut diamonds and other cuts arranged in a way that resembled the folds of a tutu fanned out as seen from above: as if one were looking out of an opera box at the ballerinas that Degas loved to paint, for example in the 1878 painting L'Étoile. This ring from around 1970 is such a ballerina ring. It presents an emerald of excellent quality in its center. Its colour is intense green and it is almost completely clear. Only delicate inclusions, the so-called jardin, prove that it is a natural stone. Because no emerald is completely clear and translucent. Rather, it is the silky sheen of the inclusions that determines its beauty. Its inclusions prove that the gemstone comes from Colombia, since time immemorial the origin of the best emeralds. Surrounding the emerald, weighing exactly one carat, are diamonds of about 2.44 ct. They are arranged like two crossed loops and swing gently up and down. They are of equally good quality, very good purity and colour, set in precious platinum. An independent certificate has confirmed the quality of the materials and comes with the ring. An inlay ring in the ring band ensures that the ring does not turn on the finger. However, our goldsmiths are happy to remove it should it interfere.
