Vincenzo Cabianca (1827-1902) An authentic masterpiece of the purest and most suffocating season of the Macchiaiolo movement... The work develops the famous and highly sought-after theme of cloistered nuns in sunlit cloisters, rendered with a masterful “a macchia” brushwork: a violent and poetic chiaroscuro contrast where the white headdresses of the nuns serve as pure and shining transversal light points... The painting presents an extraordinarily interesting collecting peculiarity: the original support in pressed cardboard bears on the back the mark of the historic early 20th-century confectionery company “B.Consonni-Piacenza.” The composition was in fact chosen by the company as a prestigious cover image for its luxury boxes of chocolate and biscuits... A gem of art that unites the excellence of nineteenth-century Macchiaioli painting with the great history of Italian graphics and industrial costume design... A piece of exceptional rarity for refined collectors... oil on pressed cardboard, 22.5 x 22.5 cm (unframed) and 32 x 35 cm with a frame... signed “V.C” in the lower left...
