Vincent Decat - Taperstick - Stainless steel

"My pieces are intended to be companions rather than possessions. I give my objects organic, animated qualities, hoping that people will grow attached to them the way they would to a pet." Vincent Decat is a Paris-based craft designer who graduated from Design Academy of Eindhoven and focuses on the relation between design and sculpture. His approach to design revolves around creating pieces that last. He believes durability comes from the emotional connection we have with things. The more we care about them, the more we protect and hold onto them. To encourage this bond, he gives his pieces a life of their own, a personality, so people can see them as little pets, companions they cherish, keep over time, and consider friends. Just as a childhood comfort object can become a lifelong friend, he hopes his work will feel familiar and alive, with subtle, creature-like qualities that invite attachment over time. This candle holder is made in the same way as stained glass, only in three dimensions. Each piece of stainless steel is edged with molten tin and joined to the next by hand, leaving the traces of the gesture visible. The sculpture grows irregularly, like a branch or a crystal, balancing fragility and strength. This piece contains glass fragments, in amber and dark brown tones. The glass is broken into different shapes, each piece taking its own form. Every fragment is held within the structure by the same soldered edge. No two pieces are exactly alike, as the glass always breaks differently. Two sizes are available: Small version : L 30 × W 18 × H 18 cm (H 40 cm with candles) Tall version : L 42 × W 28 × H 25 cm (H 40 cm with candles) Delivered with two candles.
