VILLEMER & DELORMEL — BENZA (Ludovic) - Lot 303

VILLEMER & DELORMEL — BENZA (Ludovic) Grandfather, Tell Us About France. Dramatic song. Paris, Maison Royol—L. Bathlot, successor, 37 rue de l'Échiquier, [late 19th century]. Illustrated sheet music. Lyrics by Villemer and Delormel, music by Ludovic Benza, sung by Mlle. Amiati at the Eldorado. Lithographed cover in monochrome depicting an elderly Alsatian man surrounded by children, signed in stone by the illustrator. The scene directly echoes the lyrics: Alsatian children ask their grandfather to tell them about France. Three verses with music. The lyrics evoke Strasbourg, the War of 1870, destroyed villages, and the hope for French revenge. An interesting example of a populist, revanchist song on the theme of lost Alsace. Marginal tears, particularly along the edges and at the fold; a few foxing spots and signs of wear.
