[VILLEDIEU (Madame de)]. The Adventures or Memoirs of the Life of Henriette Sylvie de Molière. Based on the edition printed in Paris. No place [Sphère imprint], 1695. 6 parts in one in-12 volume, red morocco leather, Du Seuil-style decoration, decorated spine, interior lace, gilt edges (Belz-Niédrée). An autobiographical novel, also attributed to Subligny or D’Alegre, in which one might discover some veiled allusions to the life and person of Molière’s wife, who was then at the height of her theatrical and romantic fame (Gay-Lemonnyer). A fine copy. Bookplate bearing the motto “Espérer c’est jouir” and the initials RB (Basselier?). From the library of Mortimer L. Schiff (bookplate). Slight restoration at the top of the title page following the removal of a handwritten bookplate. Small burn mark with a hole in the lower margin of a leaf in the fourth part.
