"Viking Age Bronze Openwork Amulet Circa 10th-11th century AD A bronze amulet with a rounded openwork body enclosing two elongated openings separated by a central vertical bar. The broad outer frame has a gently curved upper section and tapers towards a pointed projection at the base. A projecting suspension loop extends from the top. The Vikings were Scandinavian seafarers, merchants, warriors and settlers whose activities transformed northern Europe between the late 8th and 11th centuries AD. Originating principally from present-day Denmark, Norway and Sweden, they established trading networks extending from the British Isles and the North Atlantic to the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world. Their exceptionally advanced shipbuilding techniques enabled them to navigate both open seas and shallow inland rivers, reaching as far west as Newfoundland in North America, approximately five centuries before Columbus. Viking merchants exchanged furs, amber, walrus ivory and enslaved people for silver, silk, glass and other luxury goods.
