Vibrant Mexican Folk Art Ceramic Rooster - by Juan Jose Ramos Medrano

North America, Mexico, Jalisco, Santa Cruz de las Huertas. A vintage Mexican polychrome ceramic rooster figure by Juan José Ramos Medrano of Santa Cruz de las Huertas, Jalisco, signed on the base with the artist's initials J.J.R.M. The rooster is hand modeled in an animated crowing pose with a spotted red comb, applied flame-shaped plumage, a fanned tail in layered colors, and oversized yellow feet, all raised on a circular base. The figure is painted overall in a vivid palette of green, red, pink, yellow, and blue. Ramos Medrano works in the celebrated whimsical pottery tradition of Santa Cruz de las Huertas established by the Medrano family, best known through his predecessor Candelario Medrano Santa Cruz de las Huertas, on the eastern edge of Guadalajara, produced one of Mexico's most inventive twentieth-century ceramic pieces: burnished and painted low-fired earthenware devils, mermaids, Noah's arks, cathedral-shaped banks, and beasts of frank absurdity. Candelario Medrano (1914 to 1986) carried the village's reputation abroad after collectors and dealers began seeking his work in the 1960s, and the extended Medrano and Ramos families have continued the tradition across generations, each hand recognizable by its modeling quirks and color choices. Juan Jose Ramos Medrano works within that inheritance, favoring applied, individually shaped plumage and saturated aniline-bright pigments over the more muted slips of earlier village output.
