Veiled-fish sculpture made of Murano glass by Vetreria Fratelli Scarpa. Handcrafted in the late 1970s to early 1990s. Height 25 cm, 16 x 5 cm Condition: Good vintage condition. Chip at the base. See photo. No-label-look sticker "Vetri Artistici Murano Made in Italy Scarpa" Hand-shaped glass ("a mano volante") deliberately breaks traditional symmetry, which is perfectly visible in this maritime artwork. There is in Murano indeed an autonomous manufactory named Fratelli Scarpa (often active in the field of characteristic sommerso and sculpture techniques), operating independently from the famous architect. These sculptures were produced especially in the 1960s and 1970s in the renowned Murano glassworks (Venice). Typical for this style are the sinuous, upwardly drawn tail, often ribbed or jagged, the detailed fins, and the expressive, plastically formed eye. Since this is a documented piece by Fratelli Scarpa, it strikingly shows how the glassworks in Murano experimented with highly complex forms. The extremely expansive, jagged structures that break the light in the clear crystal glass represent, in this Venetian interpretation, a fish with magnificently crafted veil fins. That the sticker is crystal clear tightens the production period perfectly: Transparent plastic and foil labels ("No-Label-Look") appeared in the Murano glass industry only from the late 1970s, especially in the 1980s and 1990s, when these modern, unobtrusive adhesive labels replaced the old, thick paper or metallic foil labels. This paints a clear and highly compelling picture for the collector’s piece: The confirmation by the label: If an independent Venetian manufactory like Fratelli Scarpa attached a transparent label to exactly this sculpture form in this era, it proves in black and white that it is an official, standalone Murano interpretation of a veil-fish. The riddle of the form: It also shows how the worlds of design fused back then. The manufactory obviously drew inspiration from the famous flowing lines of classic American mid-century design (which overseas was known as Hahn) and reinterpreted this iconic silhouette into a maritime artwork through masterful Italian handcraft. No shipping to the USA. All information given to the best of my knowledge. Please refer to the attached photos. Color variations from photo to original may occur. Wear and/or storage marks cannot be ruled out due to the age. Shipping is exclusively via DHL Deutsche Post. Out of caution: If, despite careful packaging, your lot arrives damaged, please have the carrier provide written confirmation of the transit damage and take detailed photos immediately. Without this documentation I cannot file a claim with DHL! ATTENTION: DHL, due to new US customs regulations, is significantly restricting parcel shipping from Germany to the USA. For private customers, initially only packages to the USA declared as gifts and with contents valued up to 100 USD (currently about 86 euros) are allowed. Shipping of gifts with a value over 100 USD or commercial goods is not possible via postal shipment under the new US customs regulations for the time being. For private and commercial shipments, the expensive option of DHL Express is available in these cases. It is also to be expected that these shipments will be subject to even tighter controls to prevent misuse of private gift shipments for commercial goods. Before you bid, please check the current import regulations of your country. If you still want to win a lot from me, I ask you for a 100% correct address and a complete name (please verify in the Catawiki account) to ensure reliable delivery. If the package cannot be delivered properly, substantial costs (postage, duties, and taxes) will be incurred for its return to me. I will reclaim these costs if necessary.
