Vase - Porcelain - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912)...

Important Arita porcelain vase (Hizen), Japan, Meiji period (1868–1912), circa 1870–1890 Object Description An important baluster-shaped vase in porcelain from the Hizen province, with a generously sculpted, gadrooned body, flaring into a tall cylindrical neck ending in a broad polylobed, petal-like corolla rim. Decoration and iconography Rich polychrome and gold Imari-Kutani style decoration, on a red iron ground (Aka-e), heavily enhanced with fine scrolls, volutes and stylized clouds in bright gold. Main Reserves: The body features two large polylobed cartouches in mirror-form. They house palace narrative scenes animated by four court figures (probably inspired by the Heian period). In the foreground, a dignitary in traditional black court attire (karaginu) and his retinue converse on a wooden terrace opening to nature. The background opens to a tranquil lakescape, with distant mountains treated in gradations of gray wash and riverbanks planted with blooming irises. Secondary Decoration: The interspaces and the neck are saturated with an opulent naturalistic motif depicting large peonies in full bloom in cobalt blue, purplish pink and pale white, rising from porous rocks. Mythical phoenixes (Hou-ou) – symbols of empress and good fortune – are finely brushed in gold amid the foliage. The inner lip of the ribbed neck repeats an alternating motif of blue peonies and gold scrolls on a red iron ground. Mark and Signature Under the base, a nine-character handwritten workshop mark in red underglaze arranged in three columns: “Dai Nippon Hichozan Shinpo Zo” (大日本 肥蝶山信浦造). This prestigious mark corresponds to the high-quality production of the Tashiro Monzaemon workshop, intended for major international exhibitions and export to the West. Techniques Material: Hard-paste porcelain, polychrome enamels of long and short firing, gold. Dimensions: Height: 46.5 cm | Maximum diameter: 20 cm Condition: Excellent overall condition. Normal wear to the gold, especially on the upper lip and the reliefs of the body. Tiny firing impurities and iron spots in the original clay (evidence of artisanal manufacture of the period). No cracks or major restorations visible. Market novelty A certificate of Authenticity will be provided to the buyer. Insured and secure Express shipping within 24h by Fedex - Chronopost - DHL - UPS.
