Vase - Cloisonné

This elegant and complete pair of Chinese miniature vases forms a special collectible due to the rare composite technique in which they were made. Instead of the usual metal base, these vases are executed in porcelain-cloisonné, an extremely complex and artisanal cross-over art form known in Asian art history as Tōtai Shippō. Producing these pieces requires exceptional mastery of the firing temperature, as porcelain and enamel layers react to heat in different ways. The bodies of the vases are richly decorated with a mirror-image design of purple peonies surrounded by green leaves, which in Chinese symbolism signify wealth, nobility, and prosperity. These flowers are set against a deep red background filled with a fine-meshed cloud-scroll pattern of hand-bent copper wire. The interior of the neck is finished with a traditional turquoise blue enamel. What makes this pair special are the fixed, clock-shaped feet, made entirely of white porcelain. To give the whole a luxurious antique bronze or silver look, the feet on the outside are finished with a mirror-like metallic luster glaze that has developed a beautiful, natural dark patina over the years. The inside of the foot and the rim edges feature a contrasting gold-colored glaze. This rare pair dates from the mid-twentieth century and was produced in China for the international export market. Both vases are in excellent, fully intact condition with no damage to the porcelain or the enamel decoration. The dimensions are 11.5 centimeters high with a diameter of 6.8 centimeters per piece, for a total combined weight of 230 grams. A splendid and representative pair for the enthusiast of Asian art and refined craftsmanship. Dimensions: 11.5x6.8x6.8 cm per piece Weight: 230 g total
