Vase - Brass

This object is an antique Japanese cloisonné vase. The type of enamel used here is known as cloisonné (in Japanese also called Shippo-yaki) At the time these vases were produced in well-known art centers in Kyoto. The vase dates from the Meiji period (1868-1912) The design features traditional patterns divided into shield-shaped panels (cartouches), with depictions of detailed butterflies and floral motifs such as chrysanthemums (Kiku). The reddish-brown, sparkling sections on the shoulders and neck contain fine metallic particles and imitate the goldstone or aventurine enameling technique. The vase is in excellent condition.
