Val Saint Lambert - Charles Graffart & René Delvenne...

Val Saint Lambert – Luxval “Larges Côtes Plates A” Art Deco Amber Demi-Crystal Centerpiece – c. 1924–1935 An exceptional Art Deco centerpiece bowl by Val Saint Lambert, Belgium, from the celebrated “Larges Côtes Plates A” service, one of the distinctive designs that would become associated with the famous Luxval collection. The model can already be found in Val Saint Lambert documentation dating to 1924, making it an early example of the geometric aesthetic that would define the factory’s Art Deco production. During the following decade, the design became part of the Luxval range, created to bring modern, fashionable Art Deco glass into contemporary interiors. It is illustrated again in the 1935 Luxval catalogue. Made from warm amber demi-cristal, the bowl has a beautifully balanced architectural form: a low circular body raised on a foot, broad moulded facets around the lower section, and two striking geometric handles. The rich amber colour emphasizes the relief and produces particularly attractive reflections when illuminated. The historical importance of the design is further demonstrated by its museum representation. An example of this model from the Luxval series was exhibited in Charleroi in a presentation devoted to Val Saint Lambert’s Art Deco production, from the collection of the Musée du Verre de Charleroi. The museum display identifies the form as a Luxval coupe, circa 1935, in moulded and pressed demi-cristal. The photographs of the exhibition and the historical catalogue documentation shown here provide an excellent reference for the model. The underside bears the moulded “VAL ST. LAMBERT – BELGIQUE” factory mark, confirming its origin. The centerpiece is preserved in remarkably good condition, with no visible signs of significant use. It may well have remained unused for much of its life — particularly impressive for an object whose design is now approximately a century old. A highly decorative and collectible example of Belgian Art Deco, combining the bold geometry, warm colour and unmistakable character of Val Saint Lambert’s iconic Luxval production. Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks. The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp. The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics. Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation. Some bubbles are normal in items made of pressed glass. Will be well packaged, protected and insured
