VA-156. Virginia. October 5, 1778. $1. PMG Very Fine 25.

VA-156. Virginia. October 5, 1778. $1. PMG Very Fine 25. No. 799. Signed by Wood. Printed on thin laid paper and quite rare in all grades and unpriced in both the Newman and Friedberg references. The small notes of this emission date are rarely seen. Only the two highest denominations ($50 and $100) in larger format style are readily encountered. This lower denomination notes have the same border cuts as the previous May 4, 1778, emission while the two-letter control system was reused on this denomination with the control letters and date both typeset. At left, one may observe "Virginia" encircled by the motto "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS" which translates to "Ever Thus to Tyrants." We have only sold a single $1 note from this emission and that was two decades ago in a group lot of Ford/Boyd offerings. For decades, it takes little to reason that undervalued and underappreciated colonials have been the red-headed stepchild of the paper money hobby, but tonight this note gets its due and may very well command a strong bid from the assembled bidders. PMG comments "Repaired, Stains, & Pinholes." Estimate: $800 - $1,200. Click here for certification details from PMG.
