His best-known series, such as “The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō” and “One Hundred Views of Edo,” are characterized by a masterful command of composition, color, and perspective that invites the viewer to dive deeply into the depicted scenes. Hiroshige used these works to capture subtle seasonal changes, the play of light and shadow, and the fleeting moments of nature. Hiroshige’s influence extended far beyond Japan and found a strong resonance in the Western art world of the 19th century. In particular, the Impressionists, such as Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh, were deeply impressed by his flat, decorative color planes and distinctive line work. His works, often regarded as pioneering pieces of Japonisme, influenced not only painting but also printmaking and design in Europe. With his prints, Hiroshige created a universal visual language that embodies both traditional Japanese aesthetics and an innovative view of space and landscape, making him one of the most influential artists of the Ukiyo-e tradition.
