Unworn Necklace Made of Silver & Marcasites by Theodor Fahrner, Pforzheim

Theodor Fahrner made artists' jewellery affordable because he combined modern forms with democratic materials. Salesmen with large sample cases presented the innovations developed in Pforzheim to local jewellers. One such sample case full of unworn Fahrner jewellery has lain untouched in an attic for the last 40 years or more until we were able to purchase it. It contained samples of almost all series from about 1919 until the dissolution of the company in 1979, most of them with a model number or the "Original Fahrner" seal. The necklace here is therefore unworn and shows therefore in best condition - an original Fahrner label with the inscription "Original Fahrner / Since 1850" together with the company logo "TF" is including the old item number on the piece of jewellery. The centerpiece of the necklace features five links with fine marcasite trim and filigree fillings of twisted cords and wires. The five links act like small shields that can protect the wearer from mischief and ornamentally draw attention to the "swanlike" neck of a lady. Beautiful pod-shaped links lead over to the spring clasp. The jewellery shows the typical design language of the 1950s with gentle sweeps and elegant detailed shapes. The necklace is made of silver that has been lightly gilded. This type of gilding is called "antique gilding" by Fahrner. It has a faint golden tone by which Fahrner jewellery can be easily identified. A wonderful overview of the wealth of designs is offered in the catalogue "Theodor Fahrner.
