During the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s it was regarded as a prestigious firm on par with the best manufactures, developing its own movements that defined an era. Polerouter was introduced in 1954 to commemorate Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) polar flights, linking Europe and America by crossing the North Pole. To withstand the magnetic fields present on those routes, Universal created a watch that was specially resistant and reliable. Its design was the work of a young Gérald Genta, who years later would revolutionize watchmaking with icons such as the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Patek Philippe Nautilus. The Polerouter was one of his early major successes. The Microrotor movement, developed by Universal Genève, was a true technical revolution. Unlike a conventional rotor, the microrotor is integrated within the movement itself, allowing the production of much finer automatic watches without sacrificing charging efficiency.
