A special form of jewellery experienced its heyday in the years after the Second World War: artist jewellery. In contrast to the industrial mass production of the Pforzheim industry, sculptors and talented goldsmiths created pieces of jewellery as miniature works of art, taking the formal language of jewellery design to a new, artistic level. The Kölner Werkschule excelled in this area and gained Elisabeth Treskow, one of the most important designers in the goldsmith's trade in Germany, as a professor in the goldsmith's class. Sculptural pieces of jewellery were created, often using antique goldsmithing techniques such as granulation. After training in his parents' workshop in Biefeld, Otto Hahn, whose master's mark can be seen on the inside of this ring, attended the Kölner Werkschule and was a student of Elisabeth Treskow in 1953 and 1954. In 1960, he was honoured for particularly outstanding achievements at an exhibition of German gold and silversmiths. This ring, which came to us from Bielefeld, features a green star-cut tourmaline weighing approx. 1.50 ct set in a narrow bezel setting as the centre of the ring head. Wide golden arches form a dome-shaped structure with drop-shaped openings that make it possible to see through. Fine soldering and fine granules on these arches lead to six white gold settings, each containing a brilliant-cut diamond. A wide, slightly curved ring shank makes the sculptural structure into a ring. The ring is an unusual variation on the classic entourage ring, made from high-quality materials and with an artistic design that reveals Elisabeth Treskow's creative influence.
