Undated (ca. 1672-1694) London Elephant Token. Hodder 2-B, W-12040.

Undated (ca. 1672-1694) London Elephant Token. Hodder 2-B, W-12040. Rarity-2. GOD PRESERVE LONDON. Thick Planchet. AU-58 (PCGS). Frosty surfaces are hard, tight and overall smooth with no distracting marks, just a thin planchet fissure at the elephant's ear and left foreleg, even tinier pit in the right reverse field. These features hardly detract from strong eye appeal that is dominated by gently marbled deep orange and steely-olive brown patina. The strike is ideally centered, as well, with impressively sharp detail throughout the design. Generally considered to have their origins circa 1672 to 1694 (certain thin planchet Elephant tokens are known on cut-down pattern British pennies circa 1672), though many collectors and references cling tenaciously to 1694 as the solitary date of issue. The Hodder 2-B thick planchet is the most frequently encountered London Elephant in today's market. Examples certainly aren't rare, or even particularly rare in Choice AU and Mint State, but with its superior quality and eye appeal the present example has more to offer even than many Uncirculated pieces we have handled through the years. Worthy of a strong premium. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from Heritage's sale of the Jones Beach Collection, January 2007 FUN Signature Auction, lot 43. PCGS# 55. NGC ID: 2U3A. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
