Undated (ca. 1652-1674) St. Patrick Farthing. Martin 8a.3-Da.5, W-11500. Rarity-5. Copper. Martlet Alone Below King. VF-20 (PCGS). 75.2 grains. Choice golden-brown with intermingled chestnut on smooth, glossy surfaces. A very pretty coin with no real naked eye flaws, just a natural planchet pit below the letter S in PLEBS on the reverse, as well as a few smaller ones in the right obverse field. A glass reveals some minor old hairline scratches on the central devices, just handling, not damage. Ideally centered with design elements complete from rim to rim. The splash is subtle, blending into the plane of the fields, but widespread, extending from the border at 12 o'clock to the top of the harp and incorporating the king's profile. With such choice surfaces, this piece presents better than many St. Patrick farthings with greater sharpness, and will nicely represent the Martlet Alone Below King group of obverse dies in an advanced type set. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from our sale of the Ted L. Craige Collection, November 2012 Baltimore Auction, lot 6189. PCGS# 42. NGC ID: AUAR.
