Umbrella stand/rack - Composite - Costumbrista Scene

This decorative umbrella stand from the second half of the 20th century stands out for its marked narrative vocation and its elaborate repertoire of figurative reliefs, made in composite material with polychromed patina that imitates the effects of aged bronze and the verdigris characteristic of metallic alloys exposed to the passage of time. Its cylindrical structure is conceived as a small three-dimensional stage in which an evocative scene of everyday life inspired by rural or tavern interiors of Central European tradition unfolds. The main body presents a group of figures modeled in high relief around a tree trunk that acts as the compositional axis. The scene shows several figures gathered beside a table, in a mood of conversation and rest, accompanied by a figure carrying a tray and other characters that enrich the composition, generating a sense of movement and daily life. The execution seeks a picturesque and popular effect, with a friendly attention to detail in the garments, gestures, and environmental elements. The decoration is completed with ornamental bands at the top and bottom, enriched with zoomorphic motifs and relief vegetal elements. Small animals arranged between cartouches and scrolls impart an eclectic and fantastical character to the whole, while the classical-inspired friezes visually frame the main scene. The combination of coppery, golden, and greenish tones accentuates the depth of the reliefs and reinforces the sculptural appearance of the piece. In addition to its practical function as a container for umbrellas or canes, this umbrella stand constitutes an attractive decorative element of marked theatrical and narrative character, representative of the serial ornamental production of the second half of the 20th century, when molding techniques in resins and composite materials allowed recreating complex sculptural programs with great visual richness and a notable decorative effect.
