Popular lore has long classified it among the dinosaurs, but the mosasaur (family Mosasauridae) was one of the largest and fiercest marine reptiles to have lived in the Late Cretaceous, between 95 and 65 million years ago. A reptile, therefore, closely related to lizards and snakes. It possessed a long, hydrodynamic body, four limbs transformed into flippers, and a powerful bi-lobed tail to propel itself through the water. The largest species, Mosasaurus hoffmannii, could reach a length of 17–18 meters. In addition to the classic maxillary teeth, it had pterygoid teeth on the palate to block prey and swallow them whole. Being wholly adapted to ocean life, it did not return to land and gave birth to already fully formed young directly in the water. It was the absolute predator of prehistoric oceans. Its global diet included large fish, sea turtles, ammonites, pterosaurs, and even other marine reptiles or unlucky dinosaurs that ventured near shore. The first fossils were discovered in 1764 near the Mosa River, from which the name “Mosasaur” derives. Mosasaur species became extinct about 66 million years ago due to the asteroid impact that triggered the collapse of global ecosystems—the same event that led to the demise of non-avian dinosaurs.
