Second edition. Vol. I, Dictated to General Gourgaud, His Aide-de-Camp. London: Henry Colburn and Co. and Martin Bossange and Co., 1823. Folding frontispiece facsimile of Napoleon's manuscript, with General Gaspard Gourgaud's certification dated St. Helena, 1818, and the text of Napoleon's 1815 letter to the Prince Regent. Signed "James Monroe" in graphite to the front free endpaper, likely for likely Col. James Monroe (1799–1870), U.S. Congressman from New York and nephew of President James Monroe. The following leaf is inscribed "Fanny M. Robinson / Orange Mt" in ink, for his daughter, Frances Monroe Robinson (1824–1906), and later signed "Jean Heaton" in blue ink. "Henderson House" pictorial bookplate to the front pastedown, from the Monroe-Robinson family estate in Herkimer County, New York. Bound in full brown calf with gilt-ruled borders to the boards, gilt-decorated spine, gilt Greek-key turn-ins, and Spanish marbled endpapers; together with Alexander Pope (English, 1688–1744). The Poetical Works of Alexander Pope. In Three Volumes Complete, with the commentary and notes of William Warburton. Vol. II (of 3). Philadelphia: Samuel A. Bascom, 1819; William Fry, printer. The front free endpaper is signed "Monroe" in graphite and inscribed "semper idem" (Latin, "always the same") beneath. The signature is likely Col. James Monroe (1799–1870), U.S. Congressman from New York and nephew of President James Monroe. A "Henderson House" pictorial bookplate to the front pastedown, from the Monroe-Robinson family estate in Herkimer County, New York.
