Product description & Scientific data Scientific name: Cantharus melanostomus (G. B. Sowerby I, 1825). Common name: Schwarzmund-Becher (English: Black-mouthed Goblet). Quality grade: GEM (flawless shell with no visible damage; perfect whorls, apex and outer lip). Size: 60 mm (6.0 cm). A 60 mm specimen is a sizeable large example. The average size of the species is usually 40–50 mm, although giant specimens can reach up to 76–100 mm in exceptional cases. Special feature: The standout characteristic of this species is the deep dark brown to jet-black coloration of the columella and the inner lip, which contrasts strongly and attractively with the otherwise lighter aperture and the creamy-brown banded shell surface. Family: Pisaniidae (spindle snail relatives / formerly Buccinidae). Origin & Habitat Geographic origin: Indo-Pacific (commonly found from the waters around India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia to Vietnam, South China and the Philippines). Habitat: A marine snail species that is usually collected in shallow water or by local divers at depths of 15 to 30 meters on sandy and rocky bottoms.
