Hodler-Klimt and the Wiener Werkstätte Publication for an exhibition at Kunsthaus Zürich from May 21 to August 29, 2021. Contents see photo 3. "When painting in Vienna around 1900 reached a peak with Gustav Klimt (1862–1918), he advocated the abolition of the traditional distinction between 'fine' and 'applied' art. Klimt based his ideas on the concept of an 'ideal community of makers and lovers'. The work of the Wiener Werkstätte, founded in 1903, formed a driving force behind the development of modern design. Clients included Klimt's main patrons as well as the Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler (1853–1918), who had furniture manufactured for his apartment in Geneva in 1913. Hodler was already intimately familiar with the ideas of the Vienna Secession since his groundbreaking exhibition there in 1904. Building on this close bond, the book accompanying the eponymous exhibition – edited by Tobias G. Natter – offers a new perspective on this Swiss national artist from a Viennese viewpoint. For the first time it also examines the broader connections of the Wiener Werkstätte with Zurich and Switzerland; a development that culminated in 1917 with the opening of its own branch on Bahnhofstrasse in Zürich". The publication is richly illustrated with images of about 180 works, including paintings, designs, furniture, jewelry and more. Excellent condition.
