Thomas Russel & Son - Art Deco – 18K Gold – Dennison – Currys Ltd

Thos Russell & Son – Art Deco – 18K Gold – Dennison – Currys Ltd. Presentation Watch – 1934/36 – Men Description: Extraordinary and historically well documented Thos Russell & Son Art Deco men’s wristwatch in solid 18-karat gold, produced in the mid-1930s and with an exactly dated presentation engraving from Currys Ltd. dating to 1936. A particularly interesting combination of British watchmaking tradition, English goldsmithing, Swiss movement, and an exceptionally concrete company provenance. 18-karat Dennison case with British assay marks The elegant rectangular tank case is by Dennison, one of the major English manufacturers of high-quality watch cases of this era. The inside bears, among other marks: DENNISON – MADE IN ENGLAND A.L.D. 99132 568056 Most importantly are the fully preserved British gold assay marks: Birmingham anchor – 18 – Crown – year letter K These marks confirm a case made of solid 18-karat gold and also allow for a very precise temporal dating. The Birmingham year letter “K” corresponds to the assay year 1934/35. Thus the watch possesses a second, independent contemporary dating in addition to its presentation engraving. Extraordinary Currys Ltd. provenance The reverse side bears the fully preserved contemporary engraving: “PRESENTED BY CURRYS LTD TO MR. G. T. WELHAM FOR SALESMANSHIP 16TH NOVEMBER 1936” The watch was thus presented on 16 November 1936 by Currys Ltd. to Mr. G. T. Welham for his salesmanship. This day-id provenance makes the watch far more than an anonymous gold wristwatch from the 1930s. Recipient, company, occasion, and date are documented directly on the original case. The chronology can be traced exceptionally well: 1934/35: Official testing and stamping of the 18K Dennison case in Birmingham. 16 November 1936: Presentation of the finished watch by Currys Ltd. to Mr. G. T. Welham. Swiss 15-Jewel rectangular movement with early shock protection Inside, a high-quality rectangular mechanical hand-wound Swiss movement runs with a daily rate variation of +39 seconds per day. And this is without recent servicing. The movement is stamped with: 15 JEWELS 3 ADJUSTMENTS PATENT SHOCK ABSORBER SWISS MADE Notably, the patent shock-absorber construction is particularly interesting for this era. The construction, labeling, and execution show strong correspondences with the early Helvetia / General Watch Co. Shock-Absorber movements of the 1930s. A definitive caliber assignment is explicitly not claimed. Art Deco dial The rectangular silvered dial bears the signature: THOS RUSSELL & SON as well as JEWELLED Typical design elements of the era are the applied gold-coloured hour indices, the separate small seconds at 6 o’clock, and the elegant blued hands. The dial shows a clear, authentic age-related patina. It was deliberately not restored, thus preserving the historical character of the now nearly 90-year-old watch. Data: - Brand: Thos Russell & Son - Era: Art Deco - Case manufacturer: Dennison / A.L.D. - Made in England - Material: solid 18 ct gold - Birmingham Assay Office - Year marks: K – 1934/35 - Case number: 99132 - Additional Dennison number: 568056 - Presentation date: 16 November 1936 - Presented by: Currys Ltd. - Recipient: Mr. G. The stated weight does not represent pure gold weight but includes the acrylic. Condition: The watch is in an authentic vintage condition with age- and wear-related traces. In particular, the dial shows pronounced patina. The case and engraving also bear the marks of almost 90 years of history. A restoration of the historical appearance was consciously avoided. Please regard the numerous close-up photos as an essential part of the condition description. Conclusion: An unusual Thos Russell & Son Art Deco wristwatch, in which several interesting properties come together: - 18-karat solid Dennison gold, official Birmingham dating 1934/35, - Swiss 15-Jewel rectangular movement with patent shock absorber, and - a day-precise Currys Ltd. provenance dated 16 November 1936. Because of the original dedication, not only the age but also a concrete part of the watch’s history has been preserved to the present day. A characterful British collectable from the interwar period, whose historical appeal clearly goes beyond the material value of the gold case.
