Thomas a Kempis (actually Thomas van Kempen or Thomas Hemerken or Haemerken, literally "little hammer"; Kempen in Keur-Cologne, circa 1380 – Zwolle, 1 May 1471) was a medieval Augustinian canon, scribe, writer, and mystic. He was a member of the spiritual movement of the Modern Devotion and a follower of Geert Grote and Florens Radewijns, founders of the Congregation of the Brothers of the Common Life. Miquel Comalada (15th–16th centuries) was a Spanish writer and religious figure. He was a monk at the monastery of Sant Jeroni in Barcelona. He is regarded as the author of the work Espill de la vida religiosa, originally written in Catalan and published in 1515. In the Spanish translation of this work, published in Lisbon in 1541, a certain Miquel Comalada is mentioned as the author, which seems to confirm his authorship. This work, written in a symbolic tone, is an important example of the movement known as Devotio Moderna, which developed significantly from the 16th century onward. Meditations based on contemplation of gospel passages were replaced by methodical prayer and psychological techniques. The book has an old structure, influenced by Ramón Llull’s work, and contains the principles of a new spirituality. It consists of two complementary parts. The first part develops the doctrine and the conditions for mystical contemplation. The second part consists of a compendium on contemplative prayer. The language used is simple, and dialogues are employed to keep the reader engaged. It was issued twelve times in Spanish. In the 16th and 17th centuries translations were made into several languages, including German, Italian and Latin.
