The poignant and exceptional Great War ‘Battle of Sambre’ posthumous Victoria Cross group of four awarded to Second Lieutenant James Kirk, 10th Battalion, attached 2nd Battalion, Manchester Regiment, who paid the ultimate sacrifice trying to defend men of the Royal Engineers during the last major battle of the Great War, 4 November 1918. In the midst of operations to bridge the Oise Canal, north of Ors, Kirk ‘took a Lewis gun and 4 magazines and paddled himself across the canal on a raft [made out of petrol tins and cork floats] under a most intense machine gun barrage. The bank bristled with machine guns. He set up his Lewis gun at 10 yards range and fired off the whole of his ammunition. Further ammunition was paddled across to him on the raft and he continued firing covering the Royal Engineers in their task. He was wounded in the arm and the face but still fired continuously from a most exposed position until he was shot through the head and fell dead over his gun...’ Two of the men that Kirk sacrificed his life trying to deflect fire from were Major A. H. S. Waters and Sapper A. Archibald of the 218th Field Company - both of whom were to be awarded V.C.’s for their own gallantry that day. In total 7 Victoria Crosses were awarded for the Second Battle of Sambre, 4 November 1918. Two of their number were posthumous awards - that of Kirk and Colonel J. N. Marshall, both of whom were buried along with Kirk’s Battalion contemporary the poet Wilfred Owen in the Ors Communal Cemetery. Kirk’s parents received news of their son’s death on Armistice Day Victoria Cross, the reverse of the suspension bar engraved (2/Lt. J. Kirk. Late 10th Attd. 2nd. Bn. Manch. R.), the reverse centre of the cross dated ‘4 No. 1918’, mounted on investiture pin, and in its Hancocks & Co case of issue, and outer bard box; 1914-15 Star (3117 Pte. J. Kirk. Manch. R.); British War Medal 1914-20 (2. Lieut. J. Kirk); Victory Medal 1914-19, this last medal erased; Memorial Scroll (2/Lieut. James Kirk, V.C. Manchester Regiment) with regimental cap badge, generally very fine (lot) £100,000-£160,000.
