The Glenlivet 1940 80 years old - One of 250 - Gordon & MacPhail - 70cl

“World's Oldest Single Malt” (at the time of release in 2021) Gordon & MacPhail Generations – The Glenlivet 1940 80 Years Old. Distilled at The Glenlivet Distillery on 3 February 1940. The spirit was filled into first-fill sherry butt No. 340 by Gordon & MacPhail. The cask was laid down during the early months of the Second World War. It remained in oak for an extraordinary 80 years and two days. The whisky was finally bottled on 5 February 2020. At the time of its release in 2021, it was the oldest single malt Scotch whisky ever bottled. Cask No. 340 yielded just 250 individually numbered decanters worldwide. Despite its exceptional age, the whisky retained a natural strength of 44.9% ABV. It was bottled without the addition of water to reduce the strength. The whisky forms part of Gordon & MacPhail's prestigious Generations series. Four generations of the Urquhart family oversaw the maturation of this historic cask. The remarkable presentation was designed by internationally acclaimed architect Sir David Adjaye. Each hand-blown crystal decanter is housed within an architectural oak structure inspired by the importance of wood in whisky maturation. The presentation was created under the concept “Artistry in Oak”. Decanter No. 1 was auctioned by Sotheby's Hong Kong in 2021 as the “World's Oldest Single Malt”. The remaining decanters were released in extremely limited numbers to collectors around the world. The Glenlivet 1940 80 Years Old represents a landmark moment in the history of Scotch whisky.
