The Giddy Goblins - Hans and Hassan in Fable Land - 6...

6 rare surviving episodes from various Sunday Comics sections featuring episodes of The Giddy Goblins - Hans and Hassan in Fable Land on one each single full page. Published in 1908, artist: A.T. Crichton Comics on the back: Val The Ventriloquist, Just Imagened it, George and his conscience, The Wandering Goat Bolidar,... The Giddy Goblins: A.T. "Crite" Crichton, who had a distinctive unvarnished style, was the perpetrator of this series, which ran from January 18 to August 30 1908. Crite was a freelancer who also had a few strips appear in the New York World, the New York Herald and the World Color Printing section in a cartooning career that I can track from 1904-1911. Val The Ventriloquist: Unlike most of the Herald's offerings, Val the Ventriloquist actually served up a smidgen of something akin to humor, a nice change of pace at that paper. Most of the Herald cartoonists were better known for their drawing ability, whereas Frank Crane, veteran comic stripper, actually knew the ins and outs of gag construction. Here he takes a kid ventriloquist through his paces. Val throws his voice to right wrongs, make the world a better place, and occasionally create a little good old-fashioned mayhem. The plotlines are very similar to that Boston mainstay, Billy the Boy Artist, just substituting a kid with voice-throwing ability for one who can execute trompe l'oeil paintings. Val the Ventriloquist ran from August 26 1906 to August 30 1908. The Wandering Goat Bolivar by Hal Coffman: The Wandering Goat Bolivar ran from January 26 to August 9 (or August 30 in syndication) 1908. I admit to not knowing enough about Central American revolutionary leader Simon Bolivar to quite understand why the goat is named after him, or why, for that matter, the goat wears a crown. Hopefully an astute reader can fill in the implications of the title and the character. What I can say is that this is Hal Coffman's first known comic strip series, and ran a few years before he became a fixture in the Hearst newspapers. Coffman was a jack of all trades with Hearst, supplying large Sunday editorial cartoons (spelling McCay), weekday news and social cartoons, story illustrations, sports cartoons, you name it. Coffman had a long career, at least into the 1940s, but he was never particularly comfortable with series comic strips. The few he did were short-lived. The pleasantly cartoony style Coffman exhibits here bears little resemblance to his later work, which is more detailed and realistic. The pages are in good condition, although wrinkles, tears, flaking and missing pieces may occur. Will be shipped with track&trace. The lots in this auction can be shipped combined. This is taken into account up to a weight of 5 kg. If packages need to be split due to weight, an additional charge will apply. In this case, we will contact you. #specialcollectionservice
