Terrestrial table globe - Antique Chad Valley Reliable...

An attractive and increasingly collectible 1930s British scientific world globe by Chad Valley, from the renowned Reliable Series, featuring beautifully detailed historical cartography, a graduated metal meridian and its original black circular base. Made in England, this charming miniature terrestrial globe is a fine example of early 20th-century British educational instruments, combining geographical accuracy for its period with an unmistakable vintage aesthetic. The globe features a colourful lithographed tin surface with finely printed geographical names, international boundaries, oceans, latitude and longitude lines, and numerous historical territorial designations. Historical and Cartographic Interest One of the most fascinating aspects of this globe is its original pre-war geographical representation, preserving the political boundaries and colonial territories of a world that has since dramatically changed. Particularly interesting details include: French Indochina, reflecting French colonial administration in Southeast Asia. British India, prior to independence and partition in 1947. Manchuria and the Chinese Republic, reflecting the complex political geography of East Asia. Belgian Congo, French West Africa and Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, illustrating colonial Africa. Gold Coast, Abyssinia, Persia and Siam, preserving historical geographical terminology. Northern Territory and Western Australia, with period geographical details. The political divisions of Europe before the Second World War. These fascinating historical references make the globe not only an attractive decorative object but also a miniature cartographic document of considerable educational and historical interest. Construction and Design The globe is mounted within an elegant, curved metal meridian, graduated from 0 to 90 degrees, allowing the inclination and geographical position of the terrestrial sphere to be studied. The meridian retains its original aged brass-coloured finish and bears the manufacturer's distinctive diamond-shaped marking: "RELIABLE SERIES – MADE IN ENGLAND" The assembly rests on its original circular black base, beautifully complemented by a contrasting metal-coloured rim. The harmonious proportions, period typography and warm tones of yellow, turquoise, green and ochre give this small scientific instrument a particularly appealing decorative character. Condition Preserved in attractive vintage condition, with authentic signs of age and use consistent with its approximately 90-year history. The globe retains its vivid original colours and beautifully detailed cartography. Some surface wear, light scratches, minor marks and localised wear along the equatorial seam are visible, together with natural ageing and oxidation of the graduated metal meridian. The original black base also shows age-related wear and small marks. These characteristics contribute to the authentic appearance and historical charm of the piece. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.
