It is used exclusively as a gemstone, like the pink variety thulite. Like zoisite, tanzanite crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and usually develops transparent, prismatic to acicular (columnar) crystals that can reach several centimeters in length and exhibit a glassy shine on their surfaces.
